What is Rizatriptan?

Rizatriptan is a medicine used to treat migraine attacks once they have started. It belongs to a group of medicines called triptans, which work by narrowing swollen blood vessels in the brain and helping to block pain signals linked to migraines.

Rizatriptan does not prevent migraines and should not be taken every day. It should only be used when a migraine attack begins.

Rizatriptan can help relieve:

  • Migraine headache pain
  • Nausea or vomiting linked to migraine
  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
  • Sensitivity to sound (phonophobia)

The active ingredient is rizatriptan benzoate.

Who is Rizatriptan suitable for?

Rizatriptan may be suitable for:

  • Adults aged 18–65 years who experience migraine attacks
  • People diagnosed with migraine with or without aura

In some cases, it may be prescribed for children aged 6–17 years under specialist medical guidance.

Rizatriptan may not be suitable if you have certain health conditions.

Do not take Rizatriptan if you have:

  • Heart disease
  • A history of stroke or mini-stroke (TIA)
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Certain circulation disorders
  • An allergy to rizatriptan or similar medicines

Your prescriber will confirm if this treatment is safe for you.

How to take Rizatriptan

Always take this medicine exactly as advised by your prescriber.

Rizatriptan is usually available as 5 mg or 10 mg tablets, including orodispersible tablets (melts).

Typical use:

  • Take one tablet as soon as migraine symptoms begin.
  • If your migraine improves but then returns, you may take a second dose after at least 2 hours.
  • Do not take more than two doses within 24 hours.

How to take the tablets:

  • Swallow standard tablets with water.
  • Orodispersible tablets should be placed on the tongue and allowed to dissolve — water is not required.

Avoid taking rizatriptan more often than prescribed.

How to store

  • Store below 25°C
  • Keep the tablets in their original packaging
  • Store in a cool, dry place
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children
  • Do not use after the expiry date on the pack
