Imigran (Sumatriptan) is a triptan-class drug. It relieves the symptoms of migraine headaches such as vomiting, nausea, and sensitivity to sound and light. Moreover, it can provide immediate relief from migraine symptoms, allowing you to get on with your day. It works by altering the production of serotonin in the brain, a naturally occurring neurotransmitter that causes the brain's blood vessels to shrink. So, when most other opioids and NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) fail to relieve the symptoms of migraine headaches, Imigran can help.
Directions:
It is recommended that you consult your doctor before taking Imigran. This is to make sure that you have a correct diagnosis of migraines and the medication is deemed safe for you to take. Your dosage will be determined by your doctor based on your medical condition and response to the drug. This drug can be taken with or without food and should be swallowed with water. As soon as you see the first signs of an impending migraine headache, take a single tablet. You can take another dose at least 2 hours after the initial one if the relief is only partial or if the headache returns. However, do not take a second dose if there is no relief from the earlier dose. Make sure to not take more than 200 mg in a 24 hours period. Strictly adhere to the doctor's recommendations and if the headache does not improve, stop the medication and seek doctor’s advice.
Side effects:
The following is a list of possible side effects from Imigran:
High blood pressure.
Pain or tightness of neck, chest, or the jaw. This may also be accompanied by sweating or shortness of breath.
An allergic response; although unlikely with Imigran.
Tingling, numbness, flushing, fever, or feelings of weakness and tiredness
'Serotonin syndrome/toxicity'. Imigran tends to raise the brain’s serotonin levels, and if you're taking other medications with similar properties, it may cause this condition. Therefore, it’s necessary to disclose all your medications to a doctor beforehand.
If you have any of the aforementioned side effects, and if they persist or worsen, consult with your doctor immediately.
Warnings:
It is recommended that you see your doctor before taking Imigran if you have excessive body weight, heart or liver issues, allergies, high blood pressure, cholesterol, or diabetes. In addition, you may be recommended to take your first dose at the doctor's office to be monitored if you have any allergic reaction to the drug. If you have a history of the given medical issues or other conditions, tell your doctor.
Imigran should not be taken for more than ten days in a month as it can aggravate headaches this way. If you use Imigran to relieve more than four headaches in a month, consult your doctor.
Since there is little experience with Imigran during pregnancy, manufacturers recommend avoiding its use unless the possible benefit justifies the risk, which should be discussed with the doctor. Imigran has been identified in trace amounts in breast milk, and hence nursing mothers should wait at least 12 hours after their last dose before breastfeeding. Imigran should only be started under the guidance of a doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
