Almotriptan is used to treat migraine headaches. It relieves the pain of a headache and helps with other associated symptoms as well, such as vomiting, nausea, as well as sensitivity to sound and light. If you take a dose of Almotriptan at the first sign of an oncoming migraine headache, you will get quicker relief, and focus on the day ahead of you.

Almotriptan is a medication of the 'triptan' class. It works by affecting serotonin, which is a naturally produced substance in the brain. Serotonin narrows the blood vessels in the brain, which is believed to help relieve the pain of headaches. Keep in mind that Almotriptan is only used to treat an already existing migraine headache. It cannot prevent future migraines from occurring.

Directions

Almotriptan comes with an information leaflet that you should read carefully before taking a dose. If you have any questions that aren't answered in it, ask your doctor.

Your doctor will determine what dose of Almotriptan you should take. This dosage will be based on your current medical condition and any other medications you might be taking. You must share your medical history with the doctor during consultation, and also give details about any other medications that you might be taking.

Take this medication with water — with or without food, at the first sign of an oncoming migraine headache. Do not take it before the headache begins (in the Aura phase) as this may be less effective. If you only get partial relief, or if your headache comes back, then you may be able to take a second dose after 2 hours but ensure you have discussed this with your clinician beforehand. Do not exceed 25 mg in a 24 hour period. If your migraine has not responded to the initial dose then you should not take a second dose for the same attack.

Never take Almotriptan if you don't feel the onset of a migraine, as doing so will not prevent a possible future headache.

If you take this medication for more than 10 days in a row, your headaches might get worse and more painful (medication overuse headache). This is why it is important to not use this medication for any longer than what your doctor has advised. If you find that this medication doesn't provide you with adequate pain relief, talk to your doctor for further treatment.

Side Effects

Some of the commonly reported side effects of Almotriptan are dryness of mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, numbness, or tingling. However, these side effects are only temporary for most people. If any of these symptoms last longer or get worse, tell your doctor right away.

Some of the more rare side effects that some people can get are feelings of cold hands and feet, or blue fingers and toes. If you experience this, stop taking Almotriptan and tell your doctor.

An expected side effect of this medication is a relatively higher blood pressure. You should check your blood pressure regularly after taking this medication, and if it remains high, stop taking the medication and tell your doctor.

Some rare side effects are usually associated with symptoms of heart attack. These symptoms include tightness in your chest, jaw or neck, or pain in your left arm or left side of your chest. Moreover, if you feel a fast or irregular heartbeat, pain in your stomach, notice bloody stool, or have signs of a stroke, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor right away.

Almotriptan increases the serotonin level in your brain. In rare cases, this can lead to a condition known as 'serotonin syndrome'. If you are taking any other medications that increase your serotonin level, you will be at an increased risk of getting this syndrome. This is why you must tell your doctor about all other medications you are taking.

Allergic reactions to Almotriptan are uncommon, but if you experience any kind of allergic reaction afterwards, do not take any more doses, and contact your doctor.

Most people do not get any symptoms, and it is likely that you will not get any either. However, if you do experience side effects, including any that are not stated here, contact your doctor.

Warnings

Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are specifically allergic to triptan medications, or if you have any other allergies in general. Ask your doctor for details about any possible allergic reactions.

You also need to share your medical history with the doctor and any other medications you might be taking. If you have a history of blood circulation or heart problems, discuss them with your doctor. Some conditions can increase your risk of developing heart problems. These include factors such as a family history of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking of cigarettes, or obesity.

This medication can make you feel drowsy or dizzy. Avoid other substances that may induce a similar effect, such as Alcohol.

If you are pregnant, intending to become pregnant or are breastfeeding then this medication needs to be initiated under the direct supervision of your doctor. Your doctor should advise you of the possible risks concerning Almotriptan.
